Friends Artspace is delighted to open our sixth season with A Scaffolding for Roses, a two-person exhibition bringing together the work of Kansas City-based artist Maura Wright and Nashville-based artist Vadis Turner.
Both artists engage the grid, a historically masculine framework and emblem of industrial and modernist logic. Associated with rigidity, repetition, efficiency, and control, the grid has also been implicated in the erasure of craft and entrenching the hierarchies that separate industrial production from domestic and handmade practices.
In Wright’s ceramic vessels and Turner’s ribbon and mineral wool textiles, the grid bends toward the expressive and unruly. Rather than a predictable organizing device, it becomes a site of rhythm and possibility, like the meter of a poem. Domestic and ornamental materials interrupt its geometric logic, introducing softness and excess. The grid’s coordinates become ribbons that form a bow, or a lattice for flowers to climb, giving the structure permission to bend, breathe, and misbehave.
