CEREMONIES FOR A SACRED LIFE

Friends Artspace is delighted to open our third season with a solo exhibition, Ceremonies for a Sacred Life, by Baltimore and Richmond based artist, Angelique Scott.

Scott’s new body of wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic vessels explores ceremony as a vehicle for connection and healing. Nodding to her Afro-Caribbean heritage, Scott adorns her vessels with braids, bamboo earrings, and cowrie shells, embellished with gold and beading. 

Communion is the through line of the artwork. Scott created the vessels during her studio residencies in the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina while in spiritual collaboration with her ancestors, braiding intergenerational tradition into intimate, reverential objects. Formed and activated through ceremony, her offering bowls invite burning, meditation, and other ancestral restorative practices. 

With deep homage to the regal, communal spirit of the Black diaspora, Scott transforms the gallery into a shared sacred space for solace and reflection.
